Longtime Los Angeles local act Mia Doi Todd followed The Soul Seekers, opting for the quietest sound of the evening. Todd did simple romantic ballads, accompanied mostly by lightly plucked acoustic guitar. Veering slightly away from soul, Ceci Bastida of the Mexican ska punk group Tijuana NO! brought forth an electro rock style. Bastida’s flavor was a nice divergence, managing to add (relatively) modern music technology to the music without drifting towards full-on four-to-the-floor club music.

Singer Ceci Bastida sits down with veteran journalist Oscar Garza as part of our Drinks With … series. From her days as a teenager in Mexican ska-punk band Tijuana No!, Bastida has been a star on the Mexican music scene. Now living in Los Angeles, the Tijuana native is quickly becoming a musical force in the U.S. as well. Her first solo album, “Veo la Marea” (I See the Tide), dropped last year, earning her a Latin Grammy nomination, a featured spot at this summer’s Lollapalooza festival and comparisons to M.I.A. and Nelly Furtado. But her music goes deeper than thumping beats — politics are a major part of her life and music, she is influenced by novelists like Haruki Murakami and she’s not afraid to challenge the powers that be, including Mexican President Felipe Calderón, in her lyrics. One of her first singles, a remix of the Go-Go’s song “This Town,” is an updated LA anthem: “Our town/ It is so glamorous/ I’ll bet you’d live here if you could/and be one of us.”

Mexican singer-songwriter Ceci Bastida cut her teeth in her native Tijuana, where she started her first band at 15, before going on to become a backing vocalist for Julieta Venegas. She picked up a lot of friends and supporters along the way, as evidenced by some of the guests who pop up on her debut album, Veo la Marea — including Diplo, Rye Rye, Tim Armstrong, and XXXChange. With her often-political focus, it would be easy to call her a Latin alternative to M.I.A., but her pop sensibilities and welcoming demeanor set her apart.

Esta vez, la música de Ceci Batida, que se encuentra en dos idiomas, llega a México desde Los Ángeles. Los años de Tijuana No! Han quedado en el pasado y esta vez las colaboraciones son parte del recuerdo, aunque no del todo pues ha buscado abrir su propio espacio.
“Empecé a trabajar el disco en 2008 y en realidad lo que he querido es venir a México más seguido y mostrarle a la gente lo que viene, es estar aquí y estar más presente”, dijo.

La música de la rockera mexicana Ceci Bastida está en dos idiomas y tiene ritmos de la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos, donde comenzó su carrera hace 15 años como vocalista de la banda Tijuana No!
La cantautora dice que está encontrando su propia voz y aprendiendo a no ser tan perfeccionista al punto de demorarse años en preparar un material.
“Creo que he madurado, sigo madurando. He aprendido mucho desde que estuve con Tijuana No! y Julieta (Venegas)”, dijo la cantante en una entrevista reciente con The Associated Press.
Bastida lanzó en 2010 “Veo la marea”, su primer disco solista, y realizarlo le tomó dos años. Pero al parecer valió la pena la espera. El tema “Cuando vuelvas a caer” fue nominado el año pasado al Latin Grammy bajo el rubro mejor canción alternativa.
La artista ha tocado en los festivales SXSW y Vive Latino, en la Ciudad de México, también ha abierto conciertos para Venegas, Zoé y Ozomatli y se ha presentado en el mismo escenario que Natalia Lafourcade y Bomba Estereo. En julio, tocará en el Hollywood Bowl en un concierto de varios artistas, en el que compartirá cartel con Stevie Wonder.
